I said learn *more*. I would hope that you are continually learning more about the relevence of your own worldview/guiding principles to your life. Otherwise, how you know that it is still useful for guiding your life?

As for before I started believing, I don't remember that far back.

I know you said "more."
More as in you don't know it now but will in the future.
You also said that you already believed it. Is there nothing you can learn that would cause you to stop believing?

I've given up giving up anything for Lent. There is no reason for this kind of self-denial masochism.

I'm not giving up anything, necessarily. The church I was raised in didn't observe lent, so I didn't know anybody other than Catholics did until I was in high school and a real Presbyterian friend of mine gave up, no joke, porn. That same year another friend, Episcopalian, gave up music aside from his own rehearsing which was really hard.

This year my girlfriend is giving up meat for forty days (don't know if that includes fish, silly Bible). I intend to make her commitment easier to keep by not eating meat when I'm with her. Hopefully I can be subtle enough she won't notice. Last year, she noticed my not eating chocolate and while she was amused, it provoked a couple fights about religion.

Wait! Lent lasts for 40 days? I always thought it was like a weekend!

Lent goes from tomorrow (well, today) until the 20th (Easter) or the 18th for Catholics (Good Friday)... or the evenings of the 19th or 17th respectively if one goes to evening services. They claim it's 40 days because Sundays aren't supposed to be counted.

Thanks for making me look it up.

I'm giving up sex.

Damn, that was too easy.

Yes, as in I don't know now, but will learn more in the future. What's wrong with saying that I do not know everything about my faith/religion? Currently, I believe and act on the things I do know about my faith.

I never said that my learning would continue my faith--I think it will, but I might be surprised. I do expect for my religious ideas and beliefs to change as I go through life--as I gain experience and learn more.

I've stopped believing many things that I once thought were true--religious and otherwise--upon examination. In fact, now when I look back at the person I was even five years ago, I have a hard time believing that I thought and believed certain things.

Psycho, I was not raised observing Lent either, nor were most of my friends. One of the new Catholic kids in high school was amazed at all the blank stares she got when she asked what people were giving up for Lent! She thought we were terribly uncivilized.

I think that it is a nice gesture for you to show support for your girlfriend's commitment, subtle as it may be! Rufus helped me hash out my decision about what to give up, but he's not going along for the ride. And he's teasing me that he'll just have to go out twice as much to take up my slack.
