Default Anyone read Dakes?

Via posters at this board, I think I'll be buying the Nex Oxford's Annotated Bible with Apocryphal. A minister who comes to visit the current church I'm a member of, had an appreciation service. One of the gifts he received was a Dakes bible. When he said it, I thought he said Dates. I asked a friend of mine what he said and he spelled out the name. In the course of looking for a more scholarly bible than the KJV , I've become familiarized with NOAB w Apoc. and Harper Collins. I'd never even heard of Dakes. I'm wondering if it's so well received because it reinforces the fundamentalist lifestyle and litereal interpretation of Christianity.

I used to read Dake's Annotated Reference Bible, but I gave it up even before I gave up fundyism. Dake was a criminal, he took an underage girl across state lines for unscrupulous purposes, while he was a minister, and wrote most of him notes in the bible while in prison. He never repented for his crime.

Dake's is thought to be scholarly b/c of it's voluminous notes. But they mostly consist of lists and other trivial matters. In the places where Dake attempts to write commentary, he really displays some whacky ideas. Dake taught that Jesus didn't become the messiah until he was 30 years old, which is in direct contradiction to orthodox xianity. While that doesn't matter much to me now, it caused me to question the bible before. Also, Dake taught that each member of the trinity had its own spirit, soul, and body. In effect, that there were 9 members of the godhead.

Also, dake's teaching on eschatology have influenced way too many people. He's the guy that made all those charts about the tribulation that xians love to trot out.
