Philadelphia's Mummers' parade
Apparently, the parade is going to feature, among other things, a sketch mocking the Catholic Church's sexual abuse scandal. (As well as mocking Martha Stewart and Enron, but apparently neither of them have bothered to complain.)
An article at the Nando times reads, in part, "The archbishop of Philadelphia said Friday that a skit mocking sexually abusive priests, scheduled to be performed in the city's annual Mummers Parade, is an "attack on the Catholic faith." The satirical sketch includes priests being chased by police officers and nuns in a go-go cage. Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua in a statement called on Catholics to "express their displeasure" with the skit, which is to be performed Saturday after rain delayed the traditional New Year's Day parade . . .The Mummers, a loose collection of neighborhood comic acts and music groups known for wild costumes and stylized struts, have made tasteless humor and mockery of powerful figures part of the parade for decades." While I would never complain about the Cardinal's right to organize a protest, one making fun of a scandal isn't mocking Catholicism a a whole, and two, even it were, it;s not like situation doesn't deserve to be made fun of. And from what I hear so far, it doesn't sound all that offensive. Now if they depicted a molestation in the middle of the parade, that might be pushing it, but honestly we;ve heard more vicious slams on the Tonight Show. I see it as the equivalent of an honest Enron vice president complaining the parody of his whole company -- yeah, maybe you personally didn't do anything wrong, but your organization sure as hell did, so as long as they're not attacking you, you don't have grounds to bitch. Later in the article, it reads, astonishingly, "Mayor John F. Street said Friday that he thought the skit was offensive, but that there wasn't much he could do to stop it. "I am personally offended by this and regret that under the Constitution I am limited by what I am able to do about it," Street said in a statement." Yeah, darn that pesky Constitution, it keeps getting in the way when you want to censor things. The article's at Parade story , but you have to register if you want to read it. Rob aka Mediancat |

Darn shame it was just a hoax. I was looking forward to seeing it.
