This topic seems to be coming up more and more lately. In the US, the First Amendment protects religion, and protects speech, so there is very little chance of banning religious sentiments as hate speech. This is not the case in most of the civilized world.

Legal warning to church on gay stance in Ireland

"The document itself may not violate the Act, but if you were to use the document to say that gays are evil, it is likely to give rise to hatred, which is against the Act," according to Ms Reidy. "The wording is very strong and certainly goes against the spirit of the legislation."

Just goes to show that Ratzinger has gone over the deep-end with his 12 page diatribe.

IMO this homosexual scapegoating/hatred will blow up in the Vatican's face soon.
