Default Meditation

What is everyone's take on meditation? Are there any real health benefits, psychological benefits? What form of meditation has the most experimental backing? Visualisation, breath control, chanting? Has any of it been shown to help in scientific studies?

Meditation of any sort has been shown to have good effects on certain mind and body processes.

The Maharishi's TM program has done a lot of studies, but AFAIK they don't show any particular benefit of TM over chanting one-two-three-four.
