New planetary system?
Is it true that they have found what they think is a new planetary system that may indeed have another planet such as ours? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Basically, they found a system that's not too freaky to include an Earth-like planet. Most of the other exoplanets we know about are in crazy orbits which would preclude the existence of Earth-like planets.
The second planet of this system was discovered indirectly by observing how the star wobbles. We still don't have the capability to directly image planets around other stars. However, some of the next generation of space-based telescopes are designed to do just that. This star and its system will definitely be on the observing list once these telescopes are on-line. With all these developments, it is highly likely that we will discover several planets with the capability to harbor life as we know it within the next decade or two. Now if we can only figure a way to break that annoying speed limit. |
