Who would you worship?
Tough call. So far I've got it narrowed down to Vice Admiral of the White Horatio Nelson (victor at the Battle of the Nile and Trafalgar), Emmanuel Lasker (second world chess champion) and The Tick.

If it proves impossible to narrow the list any further, I can always worship all three as a single triune godhead (whatever the hell that means ).

Myself, it's about time I started thinking of me instead of worshipping false idols

Well, I've got a lot of heroes and two of them have been mentioned here: Russell and Jefferson. I was talking about Jefferson to someone yesterday who had been to an even at the weekend in Paris to celebrate Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists, in which he wrote
Quote:
I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; thus building a wall of separation between church and state.
We both regard Jefferson as a hero for ideas such as that. But a hero is never flawless. S/he wouldn't be human if that were so. As a humanist, I celebrate humanity, warts and all.

I think the danger with hero-worship is that one can easily slide into using it as a substitute for critical thought: "My hero said that, and I know my hero is right about everything else so far; therefore, my hero is bound to be right this time." It is more important to look for flaws and errors in heroes than in idiots.

madmardigan:

You use the tradtional spelling of the name of my personal IIDB god and savior. And I would be careful, if I were you, for MadMordigan is a jealous god, even if he can't spell for shit.
