The Abomination
Okay folks. We can see that the Destruction of the temple, or something along those lines was predicted by the gospels (even though they were written in or after 70 A.D., so that is not much of a prediction). But what about the Abomination that Causes Desolation? 2 Thessalonians mentions the Man of Lawlessness delcaring himself to be God in the temple. Matthew and Mark make reference to it, asking the reader to understand. All my bibles note a reference to Daniel in this passage. All three of these texts say that when they see the Abomination they are to run to the hills. Luke, interestingly enough, makes no reference to it all, but instead says that they are to run to the hills when armies surround Jerusalem.
Can we therefore conclude that the "Abomination" never occured? In other words, nobody stood in the temple and declared themselves God, as Paul, Matthew and Mark predicted? Any history buffs who know anything about this, or any books I could read to find out the history of the Temple destruction? The Diddley Man |

The "abomination that causes desolation" is a direct quote from Daniel. It probably refers to Roman desecration of the temple around 66 C.E. that started the Jewish-Roman War. The narrative framework is probably the work of AMk retrojecting Jesus into the recent past as a commentary on current circumstances in AMk's community. I see nothing particularly extraordinary about this.
