the way I see this is that the universe is not what we think. Our brain is sort of like the living dead, we use it to reflect reality (get a bearing), yet see only a reflection of the past. Can you remember losing someone, to have them return years later? How long does it take before we can realise, or rather adapt to the new person. When change is so slow, how much concentration do we need to notice difference?

In this sense the teachings help us to monitor change, and not to rely upon our judgement, which flows from the past- see my example with the ice-cream.
