Specifically to this case or any other for that matter, I don't know. I'm not privy to God's micro-managment.

According to the Scriptures, it is meant to discipline or bring one to God, either directly or in-directly. Accordingly, things that happen, happen for a reason which may not be apparent right away. Basically, when something bad happens, you either hate God for it, or turn to him because of it.

The "big deal" is why he died. Also, that it was Prophecied that not only would he, but how.
