Question Did God choose to be God?

Obviously, this question is for theists. Also, regardless of the answer, I'm curious why God is entitled to or even worthy of our worship just because he "lucked" into having powers that we do not?

Just like the Queen was born to be a figurehead and admired by many, as was God's existence necessary to be worshipped by us. We need His greatness to give us direction and fulfilment in our lives

This seems a little backwards.

What about those of us who don't?

Those of you who don't will burn in the eternal fires of Hell, as stated in His Book. Isn't it better to just follow along on the premise of caution? I admire you atheist heroes

First of all, remember where you are. Threats of hell mean nothing here.
Second, following along on the premise of caution is fine when spelunking, but not for living. Why are YOU following along--because of fear of hell? Don't you realize your god will know that, and send you to hell for trying to trick him?
Third, you don't have to just admire us. We're not heroes--just people who won't bend the knee to a being that doesn't exist, and would be a murderous tyrant if it did.

Frivolous, I see you've been all over the board today, spewing your little homilies like a puppy on a walk. If you've got something to say, say it. We'll listen. Just don't expect us to roll over and believe it.

Hey mods and admins, now that this is an upper forum you may want to put the "Pascal's Wager for the umpteenth time" warning on it. Frivolous just trotted it out as if he really means it. <img src="graemlins/banghead.gif" border="0" alt="[Bang Head]" />

See you in the Islamic hell, Friv.

A puppy? i like that

Yes i believe because i fear God. What i'm saying is that maybe you should throw caution into the wind because the threat here is really serious. Burning every day for a very long time is not something to be taken lightly. Theres probably a saying for being cautious and careful but i cant think of one so i'll just throw this one in:

"Why don't you just be cautious if you're not sure?"

Friv,

Do you really expect people to pretend to believe something is true just because there may be "hell to pay" for honestly disbelieving? Besides, what kind of a monster is offended by honesty that he would torture his creations for it? Even if I could be convinced that a god exists, I certainly would not believe in the tyrant you worship. Nevertheless, by your logic, we should all believe that every idea is true, including those we have never even thought of, just in case our failure to be convinced by the evidence puts us in harms way.

A being that threatens to torture anyone who doesn’t worship him is evil and not worthy of being worshipped, or even respected.
Were I to worship such a being out of fear of punishment, I would be a coward.

Fortunately, there is no hell, and your sadistic god does not exist.
(If you disagree with this, I would suggest you post some evidence to support your claim.)

We cannot understand God's motives or logic, all we know is that He wants us to believe Him.

True, it seems nasty to say that He punishes so extremely for 'minor' actions, but perhaps it all has a greater meaning.

All real Christians fear God. Why should He not deserve worship, after all He did give us happiness, freedom, life, knowledge and quiet cognitive thought.
