Dawkins and Darwin's grandson on the radio
Just heard on the radio (whilst I was driving to work) that Richard Dawkins, Darwin's grandson and some B list actor will be discussing the current intrusion of creationism into British school science classrooms. It's at 09:00 on BBC Radio 4 today, or in about 20 minutes. Go here and click on the Radio 4 feed to listen.

Thanks Missus G, I'd missed that. For all those in other countries, or who were at work at 9am this morning... wonderful Auntie Beeb have a huge archive of past recent programmes. Go here to listen to this one. (I don't know how long they keep these, so download it NOW! )

I can’t get it at work either, but I reckon they’re doing pretty well to provide audio replays of so many programmes! They do do transcripts of TV programmes like Horizon, but they’d need a huge team to transcribe every radio programme! I’ll be downloading it to hear tonight at home, so if it’s worth it I might get to type out relevant bits.

Bah, I can't find it. Can someone give the name of the programme, perhaps it's in the archives.

Well it was in my first post above (labelled "here" ), but this should take you straight to the page for The Long View:

They seem only to have the last episode on the 'listen to programme' link. A programme about famine. I guess we just have to wait for them to update it.
I did notice, however, that the programme will be repeated on radio 4 at 21.30 tonight. |

Looks like they fixed it. You can now listen to the programme on the website.
It wasn't much of a discussion, more a gentle exploration of some historical examples of the issue with a few comments from the guests. A couple of good Dawkins quotes, though. "...of course you are entitled to teach anything you like, you can teach the doctrine that the world was created in a yoghurt pot, if you want to. The question is why should children be subjected to views which are not upheld by any evidence by any reputable scholar by any reputable scientist, in science classes? What children should be taught is how to think for themselves given the evidence." - Richard Dawkins [ April 09, 2002: Message edited by: Huginn ]
|
