If it is reliable, then how can a professor at an university write such stuff and how can the government publish it?

I heard about this too. The thing we have to keep in mind is that the Middle East is still about 150 years behind the west.

As little as 75 years ago in this country the same rumor could have easily spread to bigoted protestants. it took WWII to create a environment of acceptance for Jews in the West.

While the statement is sickening and makes me want to scream I do understand why and how these rumors proliferate.

This is a version of the "Blood Libel", whose original form states that Jews liked to kill non-Jewish babies to get their blood to put into Matzohs; unleavened bread for Passover.

This lie has been around Europe since the Middle Ages. Whats really humorous, is that for meat to be kosher, all blood must be drained and buried with proper rituals. I think you could judge this "unreliable".

Why these rumors proliferate is because the people are so eager to belive them.

In Reconstruction America you had many rumors spread about black men simply to remain in control of the population. It was widely believed that black men were sex fiends driven to the point of lunacy in attempt to satisfy their carnal urges. If you ever see Birth of a Nation you will see this rumor played out to its full effect.

How is simple. It is in the best interest of the government and its religious leaderhip to allow these rumors to spread and be believed. Religion has used fear to control the population since its inception. Here in America we do the same thing. Falwell and RObertson claiming that gays and secularist are responsible for Gods wrath. All fear tactics used to control the people and push them towards continued hostility against the infidels.

The most worrisome thing about the muslim community is that the majority simply doesnot want to believe that memebers of their community would ever do anything evil. They would eagerly believe anything bad about their opponents, but not about their own.
