Power of Myth
Just watched the 2nd to last episode. It was mostly about the stories relating virgin births and incarnations. Anyway, He shows that the story of the virgin birth has parallels to egyptian (Isis impregnated by dead Osiris and giving birth to Horus) and various greek myths. But he mentioned that in 2nd (or 1st?) Peter that there is a reference that says something like "That which was once myth has been made real." As if the myths that they ripped off were like first inklings of the truth.
The only problem is that I can't seem to see what he was talking about as I read Peter. The closest I get is 2Peter 1:16 -- "For did we not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty." It seems to me that the Bible rarely looks in on itself from outside, this being an exception. But, I wish I knew what Peter meant by "cleverly devised myths." Any answers? |

watching the last episode. And I think it's cool how has similar ideas the movie Jacob's Ladder. Campbell was talking about the peaceful and terrible forms of Buddha that you encounter based upon where you are. If you are grasping and ego based you will encounter the demon buddha.
The script of Jacob's Ladder is here: <a href="http://home.online.no/~bhundlan/scripts/JacobsLadder.doc" target="_blank">http://home.online.no/~bhundlan/scripts/JacobsLadder.doc</a> Here is the pertinent excerpt: (From Louis, the Chiropractor, played by Danny Aiello) Eckart saw Hell, too. You know what he said? The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of your life; your memories, your attachments. They burn 'em all away. But they're not punishing you, he said. They're freeing your soul. So the way he sees it, if you're frightened of dying and holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But if you've made your peace then the devils are really angels freeing you from the earth. It's just a matter of how you look at it, that's all. So don't worry, okay? Relax. It got serious chills at that part of the movie. Even as an atheist this sort of imagery for rites of passage I think can be beneficial for mental health, or can really screw you up if it is used maliciously. |
