Question New Testament Introduction by Donald Guthrie.

Hi, I´m new to posting on the forum but I´ve followed your debates for quite some time now. Could anyone be so kind as to provide a review of the book mentioned in the title of the thread? I´ve already read several intros to the new testament, my favorite until now being Bart D. Ehrman's one. Does Guthrie's intro present all sides and perspectives on each new testament book? Is it as reliable as Kummel's or Brown´s are? Thanks.

I would strongly recommend reading
The History and Theology of the New Testament Writings, by Udo Schnelle. It is the most up-to-date, balanced and scholarly intro text available and is de rigeur for most introductory undergraduate classes on the NT. It is a tough read because it is more of a reference book for a professional audience than some other intros, but it is extremely valuable for getting a picture of teh current mainstream scholarly consensus and the current state of research.

Thanks CX! I was thinking of buying Udo Schnelle's book. Are you familiar with the one I´m asking about? Cheers!

Guthrie's Intro is very good. He does discuss all perspectives and in more depth than other Introductions I have had. His conclusions tend to be conservative or moderate, but his discussions seem very balanced.

My pleasure. I can't recommend it enough. It was actually recommended to me by an acquaintance of mine that teaches the undergraduate NT intro course at Loyola.

I'm afraid not. I should consider picking it up, but I've been so pleased with the Schnelle text that I haven't really been looking for another intro text. For the last few years I've been more interested in the study of Koine and papyrology using the NA27. I've read Kummel and Brown and number of more radical books by the likes of Burton Mack and Dom Crossan, but I have not read the Guthrie book. I am also chagrinned to admit that I have not read any of the work by the Alands, apart from NA27.
