Metaphysical? How about clueless or worse. The owner (still unknown) insures it for $2 million dollars, then packs it in bubble wrap and puts it in a shoebox to ship it around the world.

Quote:
Robert Eisenman, a biblical scholar who wrote the book James, the Brother of Jesus, said the reports about the ossuary's journey add to the skepticism he has had about it from the beginning.

"Now that this has happened, now that this individual appears to have packed it in such a slapdash manner, just adds to my worries," said Dr. Eisenman, professor of Middle East Religions and Archeology at California State University, who has questioned the authenticity of the artifact. "There are lots of questions one would like to ask the owner of this ossuary."

Simcha Jacobovici, a Toronto filmmaker who is shooting a documentary on the ossuary for the Discovery channel, said: "As a human being, I'm sorry that it got damaged, but as a filmmaker my story just got bigger. My star is about to go into surgery. That's dramatic."

Interesting article.

"It shattered into several pieces"

"It is still structurally sound."

Quite the little miracle, don't you think?

I suspect that "structurally sound" means they think they can glue it back together so it doesn't crumble into a heap of chalk.

If you're looking for miracles or metaphysics, that's getting desparate.

We have no idea what we're dealing with.

I heard that the Box burned a logo off the outside of its container, while nobody was looking.

HA! nice to see that others saw the 'significance' also.

to bad the X-Files aren't still on. i'm sure this would have made it's way into an eventual plot.... with the Lone Gunmen in the middle of it.

It's hard to see how it could crack without affecting the inscription.

Let's see...there's no need to do any X-Files shit. A collector puts forth a box he's had for 15 years. Amazingly, he doesn't know the value of the box, which he bought without checking the inscription on it (speaking as a fledgling porcelain collector, I have some trouble believing that). The collector then shows it to Lemaire, who authenticates the inscription, giving the collector the scholarly support he needs. The collector insures the box for $2 million, and ships to the SBL for viewing. The box is cracked. The collector collects....$2 million???? Is this all a sophisticated insurance scheme? The mind reels.

No insurance company is going to fork over $2 mil under those circumstances. (It is unlikely that the monetary value of the relic has been diminished.) But some of the scientific tests may not be as fruitful.

I just finished The Hermit of Beijing about Edmund Backhouse, one of the 20th century's great frauds and forgers. Just overly suspicious, I suppose.
