Reading list
Check out the reading list for the one class I'm taking this semester while I work on my thesis. The stuff in braquets are the prof's personnal comments. I imagine that a few YEC's might choke on his comments about Darwin's book.
Donovan, T.M. and C.W. Welden. 2002. Spreadsheet exercises in ecology and evolution. Sinauer. Brooks, R.R. and D.A. McLennan. 1991. Phylogeny, Ecology, and Behavior. University of Chicago Press, Chicago. [A stimulating, very readable, albeit now a little dated, introduction to the theory and practice of phylogenetic mapping and its many uses.] Cockburn, A. 1991. An Introduction to Evolutionary Ecology. Blackwell. Darwin, C. 1859. The Origin of Species. [Widely considered to be second only to the Bible in its influence on human thought. A truly remarkable book. Every biologist should own and read this every couple of years. Now online at http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/origin.html Fox, C.W., D.A. Roff, and D.J. Fairbairn (editors). Evolutionary ecology. Concepts and case studies. Oxford. [This new, multi-authored book is very well edited, concise, and up-to-date. Highly recommended.] Freeman, S. and J.C. Herron. 2000. Evolutionary Analysis. 2 nd Edition. Prentice Hall. Futuyma, D.J. 1998. Evolutionary Biology. 3 rd Edition. Sinauer Associates, Sunderland, MA. Gotelli, N.J. 1998. A Primer of Ecology. 2 nd Edition. Sinauer Associates, Sunderland, MA. [A great Krebs, J.R. and N.B. Davies. 1997. Behavioural ecology. An evolutionary approach. Fourth edition. Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford. Lincoln, R.J., G.A. Boxshall, and P.F. Clark. 1984. A Dictionary of Ecology, Evolution and Systematics. Cambridge University Press, New York. [Very useful -- in reference section of library] Page, R.D.M. and E.C. Holms. 1998. Molecular evolution. A phylogenetic approach. Blackwell Science, Oxford. [A very readable, concise primer on the molecular phylogenetics necessary for modern comparative methods] Ridley, M. 1993. Evolution. Blackwell, Cambridge, MA. [A good general reference for refreshing your memory, or getting up to speed on basic evolutionary biology.] Thompson, J.N. 1994. The Coevolutionary Process. University of Chicago Press, Chicago. [A new approach to understanding coevolution, which may be more common than you think.] Vermeij, G.J. 1987. Evolution and Escalation. An Ecological History of Life. Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ. [An interesting perspective on the "big picture" of the history of life on earth.] {edited to fix talkorigins link - sci} [ September 05, 2002: Message edited by: scigirl ]
|
