Default Lessons we've learned

I'm kinda hoping this one doesn't get moved to someplace fluffier. There's more to philosophy than 'who said what in which book'. Many would say philosophy is basicly the desire for wisdom. When push comes to shove knowledge only makes you more knowledgable; wisdom is more a matter of making the right choices. Those, correct me if I'm wrong, are commonly known to exist in two general flavours: wise and unwise.

So what have we learned so far? About life and stuff?

Every now and then some clever little oneliner pops out of my sleeve, and kinda sticks in my memory. I don't remember those little lessons because I've particularly learned them, but ironicly enough more often, because I catch myself forgetting them.

Life's never what you expect from it, but ultimately what you make of it.

I know I forget that one often; happens everytime I'm disapointed about something.

Hapyness doesn't rely on what you have or gain, but on your ability to enjoy it
Or if I turn that around...
Saddness isn't caused by what we lack or lose, but by our tendancy to grief over that.

What do I do with this stuff?

Golden rule of communication: if you're not sure, try asking questions first, before you come up with answers.
I know that one. And I would get in far less arguments, if I actually remembered it from time to time.

To honour the good, you also have to learn from the bad.
For those who can't stand a critic.

Don't expect to find answers, but aspire to ask and answer questions.
That one strikes me as a good way to approach life somehow.

Does anyone here carry little bits of personal wisdom with them? Let's share. What kinda wisening up have we done, what have we learned, what do we teach our kids, or plan to teach?

M'kay; three more.

It's hard to do good, in a bad mood...

The bigger someone tries to make themselves, the smaller they're feeling....

It's in our judgemental ways that we make liars out of ourselves and others...

Anyone? Anything? Hello?

How do people here make choices? What to decide, how to preceive things, which attitude to apply...

...flip a coin? Roll a dice?

C'mon, don't be shy; someone out there must've learned something. (Besides "silence is golden" )

These are saws.

Quote:
old saw
A proverb or maxim, as in Mom's always repeating the old saw, Haste makes waste. This term uses saw in the sense of saying, and old in the sense of wise rather than old-fashioned. [Second half of 1400s]
Aggregate truisms into theories. (There goes another one for you!)

Cheers, John

After a couple of times negotiating for my union against my employer i've learned to, among other things: hope for the best, but prepare for the worst

Without this one, I would never do anything.

Without pain; without sacrifice; we would have nothing.

Or...

It's only after you've lost everything that you're free to do anything.

Maybe...

It's only after disaster that we can be resurected

...

On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

Great movie.

The two that I live my life by are

Whatever you see wrong with someone else is really what's wrong with you

and

Everyone seems nice until you get to know them
