I remember some time in the year 2000 reading that someone had found a manuscript from before the time of christ that contained a story similar to the Jesus story.

I can't seem to find any information about it now however.

Could any of you point me in the correct direction here? (even if that direction is to get my memory checked out.)

virgin birth
escaped a massacre
performed amazing feats
died and resurrected
Nothing new there.

Yes but this was from Palestine in about the first century BC. So it made a good candidate for an immediate antecedent to Christianity. (IIRC)

The book you're looking for is called "The First Messiah: Investigating the Savior Before Jesus", written by Michael O. Wise.
