Default monkey business

The phylogeny leading to hominids seems to get weak where the early primate line reaches the anthropoids, say, between the tarsians and the proto-hominoids (apes). For example, web sites cover the early ape ancestors pretty well, but poor about any monkey ancestors. Where does this branch of the science stand today?

I have read somewhere that forest areas make poor locations for making fossils.

Thanks for any help!
