Post If you were forced to pick a religion......

Let's say hypothetically that you were a citizen under a government which passed a law forcing you to belong to a religion. Now let's just say that you have to obey this law and it is pointless to rebel because Big Brother will see you and will cut off some important anatomy as punishment. And I'm talking generally here people, specific denominations need not apply. I guess I'm just a little curious to discover what is the most appealing religion among the "infidels" (gasp)!

Personally I would pick Roman Catholism because first of all I'm Irish and R.C takes on a more broader meaning then just merely being a religion. Also, a would indulge in the fact that not only can I ask God for tons of favors, but I can ask all the saints too. And I like those odds, cheers.

I would adopt Asatru/Norse Heathism, the religious belief system of my ancestors which aside from taking note of the Gods and Goddesses, does not differ much from my modern-day Atheist philosophy.

Buddhism. Sounds more tolerant and peaceful than most religions.

I'd go R.Catholic (again ). It's pretty and can be pretty creepy if you think of the idea that they're eating their god. Nice ambience

Question

Could I invent my own religion? Where in the definition of religion, does it say one need believe in a god or gods?

Quote:
The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001.

religion

a system of thought, feeling, and action that is shared by a group and that gives the members an object of devotion; a code of behavior by which individuals may judge the personal and social consequences of their actions; and a frame of reference by which individuals may relate to their group and their universe. Usually, religion concerns itself with that which transcends the known, the natural, or the expected; it is an acknowledgment of the extraordinary, the mysterious, and the supernatural. The religious consciousness generally recognizes a transcendent, sacred order and elaborates a technique to deal with the inexplicable or unpredictable elements of human experience in the world or beyond it.
If so, I would found, organize, and belong to C.E.L., the Church of Evolved Life. We would believe that life's only purpose, moral or otherwise, is life itself, that life arose in the cradle of a naturalistic, and ultimately understandable universe, and that humans were the product of evolutionary principles, just as every other life form, and that the common heritage we share should be respected, biological diversity held semi-sacred, and the altruistic behavior of species propagated for the benefit of all life.

That's as close to a religion as I ever care to get.

Does it have to be an established religion? What is the government forcing me to do? Attend religious ceremonies? Or do I have to live that religion's prescribed way of life?

If I could choose any organization at all, I guess I'd declare the Fellowship of Reason my "religion" (even though it is nontheistic and not a religion) and leave it at that.

If I couldn't choose that, but I could choose a joke religion, I guess I'd declare myself a Jedi. That would just be me thumbing my nose at the State.

If I couldn't choose a joke religion, but must choose a major religion, I guess I would go for Roman Catholicism because I was raised that way, and because it is one of the least offensive of the Christian denominations.

Perhaps the Unitarian-Universalists would work too.

Well, since everybody knows that Evolutionism is a religion, I guess that'd do for me.
