Cool Happy Darwin Day!

HAPPY DARWIN DAY!

>< DARWIN >
____L__L____

Darwin Day is February 12th, the date of birth of Charles Darwin in the year 1809, at Shrewsbury, England. On this date, and throughout the month, people from all over the world are honoring the life, work and influence of Charles Darwin with events and activities which celebrate humanity and the science in our lives. More info: http://www.darwinday.org/

DARWIN QUOTES:

"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science." [Charles Darwin, Introduction to "The Descent of Man," 1871]

"In the struggle for survival, the fittest win out at the expense of their rivals because they succeed in adapting themselves best to their environment." [Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882), The Origin of Species 1859]

Man with all his noble qualities, with sympathy which feels for the most debased, with benevolence which extends not only to other men but to the humblest living creature, with his god-like intellect which has penetrated into the movements and constitution of the solar system- with all these exalted powers- Man still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin. [Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882), The Descent of Man 1871]

"Doing what little one can to increase the general stock of knowledge is as respectable an object of life, as one can in any likelihood pursue" [Darwin, p. 139]

Being that it is Abraham Lincoln's Birthday as well....

"When I do good, I feel good; when I do bad, I feel bad. That's my religion." [Abraham Lincoln, 16th U.S. President [1861-1865]. From Henry O. Dormann, compiler, The Speaker's Book of Quotations, New York: Ballantine]

I'd love to see some reports on Darwin-Day festivities -- the Darwin Day page and other such pages have been very lacking in such reports.

And the idea of natural selection makes me think about how William Dembski does not have a clue about how it works -- he wonders how natural selection can work without a conscious "selector".

But Darwin's great insight is that simply trying to survive will do the selection.

Likewise, Dembski thinks that the "objective functions" of simulated-evolution experiments are a way of sneaking in "specified complexity".

<sigh> Darwin is for life, not just for Feb 12th. It has to be lived, not just for weddings (matings) and funerals. To be a proper Darwin disciple, one should read the bible in one translation or other (eg Futuyma’s textbook) daily and attend church (eg a board such as this) regularly.
