Guys,

Douglas scored in the top 30% nation-wide on the prestigious Putnam Exam (which I admittedly never took, despite attending a school which consistently places in the Top 20). Don't you think the kind of questions you're asking would insult his abilities? For crying out loud, give the poor man a break.

Scientiae,

Never one to leave a thread in peace, I see. Kindly cease with the juvenile and inane ad hominems - they make you look desperate for attention and for "revenge".

Hey, Douglas, how about my challenge. Do you want to work throught EvoMath or not? I already have two threads up. They are entitled EvoMath 1 and EvoMath 2.

Rufus,

I had never seen this thread until yesterday - as I have time, I'd like to learn more about "EvoMath", but as I've said elsewhere, I'm a bit rusty in mathematics (I haven't really done any "math" since graduating from college in 1992). I'll try to read through those two threads you've started about "EvoMath".

In Christ,

Douglas

I get "You have requested a topic that does not exist."

Was the topic moved?

Well Douglas, I hope your maths has improved since you wrote in this thread:

Quote:
98.6% of 100 leaves only 1.4 differences; but 98.6% of 1,000,000 (I don't know what the number should be) leaves 10,400 differences.

This is, incidentally, by way of prompting some responses to my post in
this thread.

Here's a good candidate question.

Suppose we have a polymer of N nucleotides.

What is the a priori probability that it contains the following sequence, AATTCGAATT, at least once?

We make the following simplifying assumptions:

1) A,C,T,G are i.i.d.
2) We make no assumptions about the biology of the molecule (i.e. possible modification of nucleotides, like methylation). I speak of ACTG in the sense of a code.
3) N > 10

I would like:
1) An *exact* formula for P(sequence at least once | N)
2) An approximation *derived from the exact formula* as N becomes >> 10, and a threshold value of N for which the approximation is valid to 2 decimal places.

Should be a fairly trivial question for the properly trained, right?

EDIT: I will entertain pleas that this problem is too difficult.

I tried to fix the link, it's from the ii-f.ws days, but the url is still bad. I bumped the installments to the first page yesterday. They are titled EvoMath.

Screw that, here they are.
