What is the number one reason for Christians losing their faith?
What makes a person lose their faith? Is it a choice, or is it beyond their control?

For me, it was finding out about the facts. Studying the history of the bible, reading the bible all the way through from the beginning and seeing all of the absurd crap in it, and reading about archaeology, and science. All of these things just scream out that it's all made up, as are all religions.
After learning what I've learned about all this stuff, there's no way I could ever believe in anything supernatural again. Reason and faith are opposites. |

Anyway, my guess would be the number one reason Christians lose their faith is that they actually read the Bible. |

But I agree with what's been said. It's disgusting how many Christians on another forum I post on have no idea what the Bible says. And comparative religion courses (particularly those taught in secular schools) do wonders to open up one's worldview... |

Interesting what might make one lose his faith. --------
I remember losing my faith because I had had no reason to believe that God existed. There was absolutely nothing in my personal experience to justify any belief in anything supernatural at all. So why bother with all that foolishness? And I was an agnostic for over 10 years because of that. Now a much more interesting question is why someone would regain his faith AFTER losing it? ------ Because something most definitely supernatural DID happen. That is what happened to me. Personally I don't get into this one even though it was true for me. Possibly because I am just shy. But mostly because , on general principles, I hate to evangelize on any kind of personal basis. So leave me out of this. But----- any other theists here want to try this one? Even if I choose not to? |

I lost my faith because I didn't understand "God." Never did. God didn't make sense to me. But I went along with believing for a while. I never wanted to believe, because I thought the whole thing sucked, but I felt I had no choice. So the doubts were always there, and finally I got fed up. Once I got more time, I started reading the Bible more and I delved into my doubts. I read some skeptical books and did research online, such as this website. It didn't take long for me to see that I had good reason to doubt. After reading certain things in / about the Bible, my faith was totally gone. I couldn't have gotten it back if I wanted it. I was convinced once and for all that the Bible was not true.
I had tried to be a Christian for 6 years, so it's not like just wanted to become an atheist. The doubts were always there, and I couldn't help it, no matter how much I tried to believe. Fortunately my brain won out. I think people that hang onto their beliefs, after being clearly shown that the Bible is not from God, are either stupid and illogical, or too chicken shit to change. |
