Why is it that conservatives are loath to give the government new power - additional taxation, gun control, etc. - yet they are so eager to give the government the power to teach kids religion?

The whole purpose of limited government is to give government only the powers it absolutely needs, because you never know who is going to abuse those power down the road. Conservatives are always arguing that government is a bungling bureaucracy that is horribly inefficient and should not be allowed to control anything it doesn't have to.

So why on earth do they trust government to teach our kids religion? That most sensative, sacred topic. We want some committee of school board officials teaching about God? We want to give the school the right to post religious slogans - not knowing who will be in office 20 years from now? I mean, if Pat Buchanon's hysterics are believed by so many radical conservatives - shouldn't they be terrified that some time down the road Christians won't control the government? Then what will be getting posted in the schools?

Separation of church and state should be a fundamental CONSERVATIVE view. Keep the government out of religion. If you don't trust it to spend your tax dollars, or liscense your firearms, why on earth would you trust it to teach your kids religion?

You need to remember the conservative's unwritten rule about government involvement, "Governemnt involvement is okay if we agree with it." If someone tried to post the eight paths to Enlightenment, these same conservatives would completely flip out. It's only okay to teach religion in the schools if it's their religion.
