I think it is quite possible to argue that the Constitution was written more to counter much of the evil contained in the 10 Commandments, than to embody the good.

The First Commandment is the root justification for all of the Christian inquisitions and crusades of the past, as well as religious intolerance of today, where the commandment against worshipping other Gods is interpreted as a commandment against even following false interpretations of the Christian bible.

And it is to counter the evil perpetrated in the evil done in the name of the 1st Commandment that the 1st Amendment to the Constitution was written.

Ultimately, I agree with those who say that if you want an answer to this question, you will not find it here, I think. The best strategy is to post the question elsewhere. And, if you get any reasonable responses, to bring those responses here for debate.

Argued with him. But s/he wasn't reasonable at all. A few of us were there. I'm pretty sure Rufus was in on that topic. The Galatain was helpful too.

EagleLives911 is a total slash and burn the infidel dogs kind of Christian. In another place and time he'd have overshadowed Torquemada I'm sure.

Eagle and SheEagle routinely accuse anyone of disagreeing with them of either atheism, or doctrinal heresy.

Seriously. She Eagle's the worst. Disagree with her, and she'll start ranting about using "atheist sites" or making sneering comments about how unChristian you are. Then she gets pissy when called on it, and acts persecuted.

My personal favorite was when she started getting hyper and accusing her opponent of atheism in a discussion over free trade. Seriously. Apparantly, his disgreement with her over free trade was proof he was an atheist.

SheEagle and EagleLives911 are the same person. She (I assume) has both handles for a while.

I personally think the most influential commandment has been , "You shall not boil a kid in it's mother's milk."
I don't think anything should be cooked in boiling milk. Ugghhh. Ruins the taste of the milk and everything else. Milk must be brought to high temperature to sterilize it, but it should done very fast by a milk-treatment factory equipped to do it.

Agreed, theyeti. If I were to participate in any of those arguments I'd have to be sure I was using a cheap monitor, on account of the destructo factor.

As far as I know, most of the more influential of the founding fathers were Deists, not Xtians. Why, then, would they base their government on the 10 commandments?

I was wondering if this discussion was going to turn relevant to Church/State Separation -- as opposed to a personality profile of BB posters.

Now, actually, deism is not incompatible with the use of the 10 Commandments. Deism holds that God created the universe, then let it go. Part of this "creation" includes the creation of right and wrong -- the whole idea that God "created" man and "endowed" him with certain "inalienable rights". Which is along the same lines as saying that God Endowed man with the capacity to reason, opposable thumbs, the capacity to walk upright, two eyes, two legs, etc.

These all describe the creation.

And, yet, I think that the claim that the founding fathers wrote the Constitution according to the 10 Commandments is quite clearly proved false by the fact that the 1st Amendment contradicts the first 3 commandments. What the first 3 commandments command, the 1st ammendment says "thou shalt not enforce by law."

Which is another way of saying, as far as the founding fathers were concerned...

"Thou mayest have strange Gods before me."

"Thou mayest take the name of the lord thy God in vain."

"And whetherest thou wisheth to keep holy the sabbath day is up to you."
