list of church "positions" of various xian sects
This isn't a strictly E/C thing but does anyone know where I could find a list of major dominations and their views on the "issues" like evolution (for or against), contraception (y/n), abortion, premarital sex, homosexuality, and other sectual (har har ) differences?
I've just had a christian assert to me some odd statements, a whole slew of them like "the vast majority of protestant churches don't disallow contraception" and i want to know if the numbers back him up. Also, it would be handy to have as a reference. thanks in advance you bunch of godless satan-worshiping heathen infidel scoundrel dogs! |

Meert's referring to Voices for Evolution edited by Molleen Matsumura, also available on Amazon.

I would say that the vast majority of protestant churches allow contraception of various kinds--from sterilization to the pill, and generally whatever is best for the couple. Growing up in a conservative family and within a conservative community, I don't know of anyone who was taught that contraception is wrong and I find that to be the case now that I am of a more liberal belief. The easiest way is to think of who constitutes a majority of Protestant churhces--and then go to their websites and see what their beliefs/social policies state. --tibac |

Protestant birth control
I don't know about the other religious "issues" but Planned Parenthood has a lot of information on their website about Margaret Sanger and her struggle to get birth control information to women.
Abstinence was the only "approved" form of birth control by ALL religions...then the rhythm method became acceptable. As usual, science developed and people insisted on birth control information, pills, etc. When some Protestant churches realized it was inevitable...they decided to "approve" of other forms of birth control....or at least not prohibit them. In the 1930's, a woman who wasn't pregnant within a reasonable period of time after marriage was accused of knowing the "Yankee trick" (don't ask!). Up until the 1960's, it was still illegal in some places to discuss birth control with unmarried women. Birth control education in schools in the 60's (in the Bible Belt) consisted of taking boys and girls separately in to see films that showed people in various stages of venereal disease....lesions, seizures, insanity....and telling us that's what would happen to us if we "did it" before marriage. So, saying Protestant churches support birth control is too general a statement. They aren't all alike. |
