Dragonslayer and Xianity
As I was replying on this thread, I quoted the movie Dragonslayer, a film which I greatly enjoyed. As I was waiting for my post to appear, I started thinking about the movie and how xianity starts to invade the kingdom of Urland. I believe it was one of the men who had originally travelled to see the wizard (Ralph Richardson was very good), becomes a priest and is leading a prayer session near the final scenes where the dragon (Vermithrax - what a cool name!) is wreaking havoc.
I'm also reminded of the earlier scene where a priest is left near the lair and is yelling at the dragon: "Get thee down!" and other sort of things one might say towards an agent of Satan. The dragon of course, pays his words no heed and turns the priest into a charcoal briquet! Yup. Prayer is once again no help! Anyone else see this film? Yes, I know I'm dating myself by saying that I even saw it in the theater! 'Course I know the fundies probably couldn't watch it ... what with all of the magic and such. |

I saw this at the theater too. I was about 12 or 13 at the time. I remember liking it. If I remember, it had pretty good special effects (Dennis Muren, Phil Tippett, Ken Ralston, and Brian Johnson were nominated for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars for Dragonslayer that year).

Good flick, and a trendsetter for it's time. Worth viewing even today.
Wanna see how old you are? Start watching AMC... This is on there. |

The mini-series "Merlin" with Sam Neal has Christianity muscling in on the old ways(magic) as well.
