Default Greetings

Hi all.

I lurked around here for a few hours last night. Stumbled on the site when cruising around religious sites. A page dedicated to dissemination of some religious discussion boards by a thinly veiled apologetic warned that there were some know-it-all college types here. I figured what that really meant was that apologists found defense difficult here. Frustration leads to ad-hominem attacks in my experience.

My profile states that I am agnostic. I only adopt that because I figure that I can't know beyond all certainty that somewhere, sometime, something we would consider "supernatural" had a hand in creating, evolving, jumpstarting, or whatever, the universe. I say that to tell myself that I have an open mind. In reality I have decided that religion is like OJ simpson. We know from the facts that he did it, just as we know from facts and logic that there is no god.

My viewpoint in one sentence; I believe what I have to believe, not what I want to believe.

Thats a quote from someone but it applies equally well in many aspects of life.

Anyway thats me. My handle is not designed to to piss off theists but on account that I love the band. OK, it pisses off theists a little.

Greetings Slayer, welcome to IID. I think you will fit right in. I have no idea why the apologists have called us college types since most of us haven't presented or taken notes from a blackboard for a very long time. Just sour grapes I guess.

Happy Posting!

Well, I guess being in grad school makes me a college-type again and I've been called that as an insult when debating, as if the education itself somehow discredits the messenger.

I suppose being educated would be an insult if you were a theist. Such an insult says more about the thinking of theists then it says about non-theists. Its as if knowing something is a "bad" thing.

Thats right,

But I also believe that intelligence is secondary to the emotional makeup of the individual in accepting or rejecting theistic rationale.

Slayer, you bring up a good point. There is an implicit assumption on this forum that the only valid method by which to reach a conclusion is by the use of reason and knowledge. However creatures have been making decisions long before the existence of reason and knowledge. Perhaps this is the essence of "spritual". A way of knowing, understanding and deciding that has nothing to do with reason and knowledge. IMO reason and knowledge may not be a more valid method of reaching conclusions but it has demonstraited to be much more successful. As such I am going with the winner, forget about the spiritual.

I think this can be very true in some circles. "Oh you think you're so smart now, college-boy? Now that you run off to get edu-ma-cated, you think you know more than me? more than gawd and the byeble?" Some people who believe think everything you need to know comes from God, and they refuse to even look at something that might disagree. I was reading a thread at Christian Forums today that someone linked to, and someone named Stormy said "I have no desire to read any of your "put God down trash". I would rather spend my time reading the Bible." Completely closed minded, not even open to looking at something different. She knows what she knows and she doesn't need or want to know anything different. Why educate yourself when you already know everything?

Hi, slayer.

welcom to ii

belief through emotion is ludicrous.

I am a metaphysical naturalist.

I liked early slayer, still do actually. I like the songs expendable youth and war ensemble.

I actually use war ensemble for a couple of online games I play.

Check out 1998's Diabolus in Musica.

Its ace. Return to 80's Slayer while gaining a more contemporary sound.

Off topic, sorry.
