I have been thinking hard about this for some time (steam coming out of ears). It's very hard to make an fairly powerful statement without being critical of religion. If the statement we make is too weak, what is the point of the March? Using American Atheists "Statement of Principles" as a guideline seems to work fairly well: 1. Fair treatment of Atheists in the Workplace. 2. End Discrimination Against Atheists. 3. No Prayer Bullying in Public Schools. 4.Public Schools should not be used for Religious Proselytizing. 5. Creationism is Anti- Science. Stop It! 6. No Public funds for Faith-Based Programs. 7. Presidents Should Not Be Preachers. 8. Godless Americans are Heroes too. 9. Religious Mottoes do not Belong on Government Property. 10. Religion and Atheism In "E Pluribus Unum". These need to be refined into catcy phrase sound bytes but hey, it's a start. I do not see much justification for statements that paint all religion (or all theists) with one brush -- that they are all evil. They are not. Rather, statements should be careful to make a distinction between those who practice their religion peacefully, vs. those that take a more inquisitorial stance and seek to impose their religion on others. The former are our potential political allies. Not only have they done nothing wrong, they typically stand up bravely against the latter type, and we are their benefactors. It may even be said that we owe them a debt of gratitude. On the other hand, against the inquisitorial theists, I would say, have at them. Much of what they do is wrong (as in, evil), and I do not believe that there is any merit in trying to praise or appease evil. I just think it is important to recognize the difference. It is not evil to believe in God. It is only evil to force others to believe in your God. |

It would be quite simple and easy for us to live in harmony with the religious community. Just keep religion out of government and out of schools. My conflict arises because I don't want to see another generation of children indoctrinated into the distortions of a religious lifestyle at the same time telling myself parents have the right to teach their children anything they want. The harm that creationism is doing to the scientific community is just one example. I had a neighbor lady who went to college in New York call at my door last weekend from the Jehovah's Witness with a wild little book about creation. I felt like shaking her a little. We all know the harm that religion sometimes causes and we must struggle against the harm if not the religion itself. |
