Unfortunately, even with all the links to the article posted here, all I get is this:

Quote:
The page cannot be displayed
There is a problem with the page you are trying to reach and it cannot be displayed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Open the www.memphisflyer.com home page, and then look for links to the information you want.
Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

Click Search to look for information on the Internet.
You can also see a list of related sites.

HTTP 500 - Internal server error
Internet Explorer
I also couldn't find the article, when searching the "memphisflyer" website. I guess it's probably a problem with me or my browser, but could someone perhaps post it here? Please? Or tell me how I can view it where it is?

mongrel,

Posting the entire article would probably violate the copyright (not sure). I did email it to myself, however and I'd be more than happy to forward it to you (you can PM me with your email address if you don't want to post it)

I just tried the link again and also got the same error. However I was not able to get to the main page either. I think their website may be down.

Thumbs up

My 2 bob's worth:

Ed, I just got to read your article(many thanks to Jewel ). I can't believe you managed to get it published anywhere in the bible-belt. Amazing!

I thought it was great. I certainly hope it gets distributed widely and read(and I mean, really read, and possibly taken to heart by theists- well you did mention "hope" ) by more people than just one publication would.

To continue the quibbling, so is the IRA.

Folks:

First, I never properly thanked missus_gumby for posting a link to my article "The Empty Box" on this web site. Thanks, missus.

Second, it's going to be harder to find the article, now that it's no longer my current column on The Memphis Flyer site. I write a column each week, so it's been replaced by the current one. You can still find it by going to www.memphisflyer.com and then putting my name (Weathers) in the search box. You'll find everything I've written for them there. Then you'll have to scroll down till you find it. I'm still flattered anyone would want to find it.

Third, anyone who wants to reprint or pass around the article should feel free to do so. I'd appreciate it if you'd keep my byline on it and maybe my email address ([email protected]). I am a freelance writer, and maybe it will bring me some business. (Sorry, is that gauche and mercenary?)

Finally, and most importantly, I was recently reading Frederick Douglass, the 19th century abolitionist. If you want to read a writer who thinks American Christians are hypocrites, read Douglass. Though he seemed to be a believer (maybe, maybe not), he felt the churches helped perpetuate slavery and that the organized churches were full of evil people. He quotes Tom Paine admiringly, so I'm not sure what his real feelings on religion were.

Thanks again for all the positive messages.

Thanks Ed! I posted the link to your article after an email correspondant from California sent me the URL. I thought that the article deserved a wider audience, and that you may appreciate a little support from those of a similar philosophical outlook, so I posted the URL here. You may also be interested to know that the URL has also been posted in the online version of the (British) National Secular Society news column. Mind you, I suspect that even without The Internet Infidels, your name is now known amongst a select few across the planet!

Thanks for writing the article, because as far as I can tell from over here in England at this point in time, the US definitely needs that sort of opinion aired in the public arena, as much as possible.

Concerning Frederick Douglass - I know he was quite dismissive of the value of prayer. Here's my favourite quote of his:

Quote:
"I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs."

That IS encouraging! I'm sure that between II and the Meetup folks, the network is going well indeed!

I found the SecWeb from another link that I followed after Googling "atheist" and looking around there a bit. I know the If you have set yourself on fire... thread garnered us a few new members, and now I will be (hopefully) spreading the word a bit more when I'm wearing my new II t-shirt!!! I've also got the SecWeb listed as one of my favorite links on my Yahoo! profile.
