Question Just a question for christians

How do these 'sins' compare according to you as a christian?

[*] Murder[*] Non-belief of God[your one][*] Sodomy[*] Masturbation[/list=a]

Honest opinions are welcomed.

What do you mean by "compare according to you as a Christian?" What are we supposed to be comparing these sins to? To other sins? I'm confused by your phrasing, so if you have time, could you please explain what you mean by "compare"? Thanks- its greatly appreaciated.

Well you could think about how serious they are by thinking about how serious the punishments should be.
e.g. for the first three, in the O.T. the penalty was usually death, so they would be equally bad.

Just because the punishments are severe doesn't necessarily mean the crime is serious. Any sin is equally serious in that it takes us further away from God.

Question

Buttercup,
If I have sex outside of marriage and then I kill someone, which sin is worse? Is telling a lie a sin equal to murdur? Just curious because my mother told me they are all the same.

Thanks,
Kally

Yeah, like in Numbers 15:32-36 where God ordered the Israelites to stone to death a man who committed the trivial offence of gathering wood on the Sabbath. (The penalty for working on the Sabbath [sunset Friday to sunset Saturday] used to be death, but that law was eventually phased out by the Christians, even though it is one of the Ten Commandments)

Ok, so then do you think that every crime should have the same punishment - e.g. stealing a pack of chewing gum vs. skinning your family alive? They are crimes because they involve us turning away from God, and since they are equally serious, shouldn't the punishment also be equally severe?

Mad Kally,

Spiritually speaking, a sin is a sin. As to which sin is worse, having sex outside of marriage or killing someone, I'm afraid I don't know enough to be able to fully answer your question. They both take us further away from God, and spiritually speaking, they are pretty much equal. Earthly speaking, murder is worse because you take the life of someone else. I'm sorry if I have confused you more, but this is the best I can do.

JohnClay,

Yes, stealing a pack of chewing gum and skinning your family alive both turn us away from God, and the spiritual consequences(sp?) are the same. However, the earthly consequences(sp?) are different. Stealing a pack of gum is petty theft, and skinning your family alive is homicide. The punishments for these two crimes are different in that one is killing your family and the other is petty theft. The spiritual consequences are the same, they take you futher away from God and result in an eternity in Hell unless you sincerely repent, but the earthly consequences are different. I hope that makes sense.

Question

buttercup,
I have bad thoughts sometimes. I'm ashamed to say that I lust after men in my heart. What should I do?

Thanks,
Kally

Mad Kally-

Sinning is serious, but it can be redeemed. If you are sincere in that you are ashamed, then you should pray to God and ask for His forgiveness. You said eariler that your mom told you that sins are all the same- you should talk to her and to God. I hope this helps.
