I am so glad people like do not come to my door, or when they do the loud barking and big fangs of our beautiful dobie scares them away!
If I had a headache I don't know I would have as much patience. Kudos to you for a job well done! Brighid |

Thanks. Actually, the headache was fading. I think I just didn't have the energy to get belligerent with him. I don't think I ever have that kind of energy anymore. This is a good thing. One doesn't run much chance of relaying anything useful when one is angry.
He wasn't really in a mental position to even entertain any of my ideas, but...everybody starts somewhere. I wonder if he got to the next house, got a few sentences into his pitch, then thought, "Wait a minute! She said she reads scripture?!" Rather, considering his apparent processing skills, he sat bolt upright in bed at 1 o'clock the following morning and said that to himself. There was more that I forgot when I was typing that up. I asked him why he thought the bible was the right scripture. He looked flummoxed, so I said, "Have you ever read anybody else's scripture? Like the Koran?" He said, "The Koran? What's that?" (To be fair, I pronounce it ke-RAN, so maybe my pronunciation was confusing him.) I pointed out he should take a few science classes, and maybe some philosophy when he gets to college. I think we were discussing his apparent lack of training in the fine art of thinking. He said he'd taken science and philosophy. They teach philosophy in high school? In Alabama? Oh pleeeeease. At that point, he was just being defensive and gainsaying everything I said. That's all. d |

He couldn't understand why I wouldn't help him. He didn't realize I make it a point to avoid buying $5 mini-bags of M&Ms clearly marked NOT FOR RESALE out of a paperbag from someone wearing stained clothing that I can smell from 5 ft away. Now if I could just resist those damned thin mints. |

I enlisted when previous attempts at getting a commission were unsuccessful (long story - never did get the commission). I earned my AAS through the CCAF, although it was easier already having a BS, but others I knew got theirs rather quickly as well! For me, I only needed 4 classes. I actually took the public speaking class, 'cause I knew it was a weak point for me, and I could use the practice, but CLEP'd (tested out of) the other three! Bingo! AAS degree! |

About ten years ago, my dog was out in the garden when a Jehovah's Witness came to the door. She wasn't a really big dog (collie cross), and she didn't look too fierce, but she did not like people she didn't know in her patch. My mother went out to see what the growling was, and found the poor JW pinned against a tree in the garden, with the dog not letting him move an inch. The leaflet the guy was holding said, in large letters, 'YOUR LIFE IN HIS HANDS'. Unfortunately, I don't think he saw the funny side. |

Back when I did AC/refrig repair, I used to get out of more work when the customers had large dogs, especially if there was any kind of sign around as a warning.
All I needed to hear was one loud bark from anywhere, and wham-bam-thank-you ma'am, a note went on the gate (if there was one) or the house door-------------saying if you call in again, I may get back to you tomorrow, but you better have your dog/s completely secured. (If I wanted to be nice about it, I would mention the possibility of buying some dry ice.) And then, toodle-loo, off down the road I would go. Just entered "bad dog" on my service order and never was questioned on my judgement. If you think this is overreacting, then you have never done service work and had the crap scared out of you by a big unfamiliar dog. (Or seen the scars on some of the techs who learned a little too late some of the lessons you eventually do learn) |
