Thank you.

The Nutwatch will be on hiatus after today (family matters and other things for me to take care of) but i do plan to start the column up again in February. I just need a bit of a break.

I have a theory about fundie hatred of Harry Potter and similar pop-culture phenomena:

They hate competition -- fundyism may not seem to many people as interesting as Harry Potter.

That may also explain all the "Christian" pop culture -- it's a way of co-opting the competition.

You may be right...although I know of several fundies who love Harry Potter. Borders has several books in the religion section written from a religious perspective praising Harry Potter.

Personally, I think the Harry Potter novels are a great thing.

The competition theory sounds very plausible to me. Especially since the Xians are now getting into all forms of popular music, including rap. They probably either are going with the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" or "if it works for them, it can work for us" trains of thought.

Agreed, but I think there's more to it. The alarm goes off in my head when I consider the lack of public outcry against LoTR, which has a great deal of sorcery in its own right. I think it has something to do with Harry and his cohorts being children.
