I posted this under Misc. Religious Discussions, but maybe there would be some people here that could help.

I need to write a one page paper for my physical science class. We are going to debate the topic about the account of Creation in the book of Genesis and the scientific study of geology and plate tectonics.

Does anyone know of any good books or sites where I could find information pertaining to this topic, either for or against?

Try this out for size. What you really need to look at is how the limestone and dolostone (the pink stuff) of western Ohio is bowing downward as you move east. These very hard bedrocks are overlayed by "softer" sedimentary rock (shales and sandstones, the blue and greens). Question is why there is this bowing down? Not really understandable under an instantaneous creation model, but certainly under a gradual loading model.

Something to note is that the First story of creation never really explains how the earth was made. The bible is virtually free of any geological information! In the beginning the earth was without form and chaotic. Yet, it already existed. The first story of creation never says that the earth was created "from nothing".

The first story of creation also seems to indicate a flat earth (don't let them say that the bible says the earth is round, that isn't the argument. What the issue is that the 1st story of creation indicates this and that story alone). To divide the chaotic waters, god places a dome over the earth. Now we all know you can't put a dome over a sphere to protect it from water coming from below! You only can put a dome on a planar surface to successfully lock it off from the outside. You wouldn't have a submarine with only a top half, would ya?

The story of the Great Flood is the next part of the creation model. The flood encountered has a twist. For god punishes man by exposing him to the conditions of the earth prior to the first story of creation! The windows of the sky were opened, IE the firmament that was created in day two. The fountains of the deep, the water from below.

Then you have Peleg, who was around when the Earth was divided. It should be noted that the "dividing" of the earth is given very very little emphasis, for it is only mentioned here and within Peleg's name. Seeing that continents moved large distances and mountains were created, one would think that a greater significance would have been brought alone with this. I think it is possible, that there was an earthquake that caused a crack in the ground, and Peleg is being referenced to that, and not Pangea breaking up into 7 continents.
