The woman is a member of the Church of Christ. They call their leaders 'elders' and call each other 'brother' and 'sister.' Quote:

I happen to know that this woman was raised in the church of Christ and had just profoundly re-dededicated her life to God and the church. Hope this clears it up. Personally, I think most of your observations still stand. Talulah [ August 25, 2002: Message edited by: Talulah ]
  |

Having also been raised in the CoC, I concur with Talulah. It's uncanny how very similar the two are. Thanks for the education. And I think most of your observations stand. d |

It's uncanny how very similar the two are. Regarding the practice of calling fellow Christians "brother" or "sister", I think the Seventh-Day Adventists do this too. |

Damn! Thank you, Wolf, for that insight. I was also raised in the conservative version of the Church of Christ. How funny that they are so similar to the LDS, yet in many CoC circles the LDS ranks third in the unwritten heirarchy of "people going to Hell:"

1.) Unbelievers 2.) Catholics 3.) LDS Or at least it seemed to me by the attitudes displayed toward different groups. I have to point out, though, to those who may not know that there is a rather large movement slinking through the Churches of Christ, at least in the Bible Belt. Many, many churches (including my parents') are splitting - the hardcore fundies that diana, Talulah, and I grew up with are separating from the more liberal members, and vice versa. It's really kind of pitiable. Oops, sorry to veer off-topic! Didn't she (the subject of this thread) say also in other posts how she used to be deeply involved in the occult? She very much believes in demons, angels, and spiritual warfare. I can't help but think that this would irritate her unbelieving husband, as well. Yikes. I'm so glad I'm not in that mindset anymore. This thread is giving me flashbacks! But it's becoming therapeutic for me.I still haven't decided if I should post in that thread or not. |

I posted them at II a few days after she posted them on the board. I was just struck by the irrational tone of them. |

I have noticed this as well. Contrary to some people's beliefs, I believe that this movement will just create more staunch believers of the conservative manner and tip some over to the other side. Reactionairy tactics is something the CoC is good at. In any event, there has been much preaching about 'change agents' since the early 90's and earlier I am sure. The reactionairies get further and further out there. Imagine, all this from a group who wanted all churches to mesh together and follow only the bible, we have splintering after splintering after splintering of the 'one true church'. Excuse me while I hurl. |

Yes Terracotta I have seen the in JW's as well. It would seem that a new brand of "zealot" is being spawned from the twisted remains of the old ones. Some of the old doctrine is being questioned by newer and younger members and labeled immaterial and irrelavent to the straight worship of god. Wolf |
