pariahSS:

I haven't read the entire Bible, nevertheless the few quotes I know usually is quite enough to discuss biblical matters.

So what is your stance on those who have read in part teh Bible?

I don't think it's necessary or important for a Xn to read the whole Bible.

The OT has importance for a Xn only in setting background to the NT. I would recommend that a Xn read only Genesis and set the rest aside for spot consultation as needed while reading the NT.

The irreducible minimum that a Xn must be read is one of the four Gospels, preferably two (John and one of the Synoptics), and even better all four. And then I'd throw in Romans for its coverage of the relevance of the Mosaic law after Christ, salvation through faith, original sin, and other major theological concepts.

The rest of the Bible is for scholars, Jews (i.e., the OT), or nutcases.

I think they should read the whole thing. It would definitely aid in their deconversion.

Seriously, though, I've lost track of the number of times I've been confronted by Christians whose knowledge of OT law is limited to the parts concerning homosexuality. When they tell me that G-d hates faggotry because the OT says so, I like to quote one of the more outrageous OT laws and ask, "Do you think we should follow this one? Do you follow this one?" The speed at which they're reduced to cussing me out leaves me torn between and :banghead: .

I got it at a computer show. I took another look at the terms and it's got basic shareware terms, so I guess I can legitimately copy it.

you know-god says dont eat shellfish. you should really order the porterhouse. WTF THATS NOT IN THE BIBLE!
Talk to a Catholic. They believe a whole SHITLOAD of stuff that's either not in the Bible or directly contradicted by the Bible. Their response? Either something about oral tradition being as important as scripture, or a lecture about how you're committing the Protestant Heresy by attempting to interperet the Bible without going to a priest college first.

Not that I want xians to get any more fundie.... its just that if they had to read the bible before they could consider themselves christians, then most would opt out. (the bible is a freakin' huge book.) on a parallel note, one could not call themself an Objectivist if they had not read Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead (which is why there are not that many, and they lose interest after a while)...

My Christians prefer to have someone else read and interpret the bible and then make up these neat little booklets explaining all the implied important parts. The Daily Bread is one of these propaganda tools which makes the readers think they are reading the Bible because of the references to it, but also gives the writers' version of the story. For an average person to actually sit down and read the whole Bible.....get real....its as dry as a pop-corn fart! (and its smells just as bad)

I have several bibles in my hard disk. I have HTMLBible, e-Sword Bible Software, and Monoon Bible Reader (my personal fave). I also have Pilate Project installed, which has a KJV bible, The Skeptic's Annotated Bible, and archives of The Skeptical Review.
