The US Open starts today. Does anyone here care?
Personally, I'd like to see Phil Mickelson finally win a major. He's taken a lot of derisive press in the past for not stepping up and winning one. Among the things Phil has been called for his lack of success in major tournaments; Lard-ass, Man Boobs, Heimlich Boy, Choker, Wimp, Wuss, etc. Pretty brutal. So hopefully he can silence all these sports fans and writers. However, he doesn't appear to be in the Top 20 as of now. But it's early and I don't know if he's even teed off yet. Another guy I'd like to see win the thing is Collin Montgomerie. At some point a few years ago he made a minor criticism of American fans and he's paid 100 times over for it. At this point, Monty would be happy to be called the things Phil Mickelson has. I have to admit that American golf fans are far more boorish than their European counterparts. Does anyone here have any favorites? If nothing else, everyone can root against Vijay Singh for his snobbish comments regarding Annika Sorenstam several weeks ago. It turns out he was right, but there was no reason to be tactless. Well, I'm off. It's US Open week and I have a keg full of a Guiness clone that I brewed last month in addition to a new big screen that I purchased with money left over from the sale of my last house. |

I might watch it on Sunday, after actually going out and playing a real 18 holes in the morning. Ummm. . . go tiger.

Well I'm an avid golf fan, but instead of favorite golfers who I'd like to see succeed, I'd rather just have an exciting tournament. I think Davis Love winning would be particularly nice, given that his step brother (I believe) just committed suicide. I'd like to see some of the over 40 guys do well--someone like Nick Price, maybe even a relatively unknown like Fred Funk. Again though, the big thing is an exciting tourney; I'd like to see a back-nine battle on Sunday, otherwise it might be boring.

I agree. When Tiger Woods is leading by 7 shots with 9 holes to go it makes for a boring spectacle.
What's strange is that last year's British Open came down to a playoff between 4 players but the press derided the "shabby play". At least here in the US they did. I didn't get the popular press' take on the whole thing. I thought that Ernie Els chip out of a bunker from an incredibly awkward lie on 18 to all but win the tournament was a wonderful example of skill under tremendous pressure. But all I heard about was "if Tiger didn't have to play in that hurricane on Friday he probably would have won". Nonsense. Oh well, I guess people love a winner. I too am going to try and get out on Sunday and play as well. I was supposed to play today but the round was unexpectedly cancelled. Go Tiger? At this point it seems he hardly needs encouragement. Not that I'm rooting against him, he will probably end up being known as the greatest to ever play the game. But most of the time I like the underdog. Mike Weir was a great example, and he's a lefty too, like me. |

The only thing to console him will be the millions of dollars in the bank and being able to play golf everyday. Okay, I'd take it. |

I'd like to see Jeff Sluman do well. He's originally from around this area (near Rochester NY), and the folks I know that have had the pleasure of meeting him all say he's a great guy. He now lives in the Chicago area, so there's a local angle that way as well. It's cool that he's re-vitalized his career in his mid-40's.

The U.S. Open is usually perfect for guys like Sluman; you don't have to hit the ball a mile (well, maybe with the exception of last year at Bethpage) and steadiness, patience, and maturity are essential ingredients. I saw Sluman play a few years back and was very impressed with what little I saw of him. He wasn't flashy, but he certainly was consistent. No mistakes.

Tom Watson, is apparently, the man. But can he keep it together three more days? It must be those midwestern values.
