Cows at shopping malls, buying loud synthetic clothing.
Cows, driving SUV's, full of road rage. That's ugly. [ March 12, 2002: Message edited by: bonduca ]
|

Jon: "I notice nobody has voiced their support for giving Bovines the right to vote. But, if we are to extend them greater rights, why stop at liberty? Why not equality and fraternity? If allowing Bovines their franchise seems silly, then it quite possible indicates that there is a certian limit to their rights.
I'm calling my lobby group Bovines Ultimate Life and Liberty, Suffrage and Health Into Tomorrow, aka BULL SHIT." The sarcasm is appreciated (a little), but the thought has as much depth as a Britney Spears song. Voting is a part of a certain human social structure. What has it got to do with cows? It's as irrelevant as you being allowed to wallow in swill by the more benevolent pigs from Animal Farm. So, you don't mind condoning the slaughter of animals for the sake of your appetite -- there is no need for you to eat meat -- the arbitrary killing of a sentient being for no other reason than your dietary habit. Great, when the first wave of highly intelligent cannibal aliens land to eat you, you won't mind them arguing as you do above, will you? |

Now, that said, if you think we're about to be visited by aliens who eat Humans, well, I'd have to say that the public education system has failed us yet again. Speaking of cannibalism, your tinfoil hat kinda makes you look like a baked potato. Ymmm... baked potato. Jon [ March 12, 2002: Message edited by: Jon Up North ]
|

And so Spin brings up a much more reasonable situation.
quote: ---------------------------------------------------- when the first wave of highly intelligent cannibal aliens land to eat you, you won't mind them arguing as you do above, will you ---------------------------------------------------- This is called pitching down to the audience. "Bring on the cannibal aliens!!!! They won't be eating me because they're cannibals and since they're aliens they're not human." Sorry, but I can't unpack anything meaningful from these sentences. "Now, that said, if you think we're about to be visited by aliens who eat Humans, well, I'd have to say that the public education system has failed us yet again." Well, obviously if you can't deal with a clearly hypothetical proposition, then I'd have to agree with your statement about the public education system. "Speaking of cannibalism, your tinfoil hat kinda makes you look like a baked potato. Ymmm... baked potato." Sentient beings, eh? |

Sorry, this is the first thread AFAICR that I’ve entered in the vegetarian debate. I for one certainly don’t believe in the morality of the Animal World. Mother Nature is a bitch, however morality is a human construct and as such it is up to us to decide what is moral behaviour.
Two and a half questions for the untroubled carnivores : 1. Presumably you care enough not to want the animal to experience unnecessary pain. Is this in some ways a double standard ? That you care not to want them to suffer, but not enough to stop the actual killing ? 1a. Are there any who genuinely believe that we should not treat animals with any degree of compassion ? 2. Various levels of animal consciousness can be roughly equated with various forms of (generally severe) human mental disability. How do then morally make the distinction to protect one and not the other ? |
