There is an article in today's Chicago Tribune that may be of interest to some. Title: "By fits and starts, life may have begun. New evolution theory is survival by gene sharing."
You need to register with the Trib to access the article online, but it's free: <a href="http://www.chicagotribune.com" target="_blank">www.chicagotribune.com</a> The article covers new research by Carl Woese at the U of Illinois, suggesting that life began multiple times but was only successful three times. Quote from Woese: "The question is whether the universal common ancestor was an individual or whether it was a community of organisms that were exchanging genes. The evidence indicates that there was a community of organisms exchanging genes and that three dominant cell lines emerged." |
