Question about a hindu custom
I had a question about a Hindu custom for Hinduwoman or any other knowledable party. I notice that some Hindu women have a brown dot on their forehead. I'm pretty sure their hindus since I've never seen a woman wearing a hijib with such a marking. I was wondering what the signifiance of this is. Forgive me if this question sounds rude, but I've been curious about this and don't want to ask a complete stranger in public about it.

My reply : In modern terms, Yes ... "Pottu" (as it is called, IF used by ladies) is nothing more than a signboard stating whether someone is taken or not. More colorful a person's Pottu is, more available a person is. However, I heard (I cannot confirm any of this, it is something I had heard in conversation only) from some Hindus that the reason for Hindus putting those marks on their forehead is related to the "Third Eye" or "Mind's Eye". I heard also that putting the mark there prevents a person (especially the ladies) not to be easily influenced by strong-willed/minded person with bad intentions since such person could manipulate them if their mental powers is stronger. Still remember the 1st Star Wars where Obi Wan Kenobi easily manipulated the stormtroopers in Luke's hometown? "Weak minded people are effected easily by the force" ... or something like that. |
