Thumbs up Ventura Rocks Again!

Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura vetoed a bill that would require schools to say the Pledge of Alligance at least once a week.

Jesse defending the fatihless once again. I sure hope he runs again, and wins.

In a unrelated C/S Ventura got reamed for cutting spending to balance the budget. They're calling him Jesse "the Samuri" Ventura. Many of the cuts were to the arts. I like these ideas but not at the cost of deficit spending.

Jesse rocks!

For the most part I like Ventura as well. However, he isn't into the arts much. I read an interview that he did for Playboy magazine (I don't remember the issue date ) and he was not interested in the arts. He might have advocated cuts in the arts at that time but I don't remember.

I'm sure you could go through your "files" and find it though."

If Jesse doesn't like the arts fine, I like supporting the arts, but a balanced budget in more important.

I honestly don't know enough about Jesse's politics to say I like them or dislike them. Having said that, one thing I truly love about him is his honesty. I've seen several interviews with Jesse, and I am amazed with his honesty. At least you know what you're getting.

I'm glad he is taking a stand. I don't mind the pledge of allegiance, but i understand the "one nation under god" thing wasn't even in the original that my dad used to say in school! So in effect you're forcing kids to pledge to god, and that's not right in public schools. That's why we should have more of a private school system.

BTW, the idea of the government supporting the "arts", as an artist myself, is kind of scary. I shouldn't get to make my stuff at the expense of people who will never see or hear it.

Jesse didn't bring up the "under God" phrase when justifying his veto. What he said is the bill isn't needed because there isn't a problem with lack of patriotism in this country. I knew something bothered me about the pledge bill and that was it - it's addressing a problem that doesn't exist! Mostly, though, Jesse has a libertarian streak and doesn't think you can or should force people to be patriotic.

Cydonia-- my kids go to a private pre-school where the teachers have the kids sing that Johnny Appleseed song before lunch every day. I had it out with them about it but they can pretty much do what they want in that area as my tax dollars do not support them. I can choose to take my kids out of course, but this is the best place for them to be, so I tried to compromise with them. Private schools, even the non-religious ones are not going to be an improvement on this situation, especially if they are owned by xians. We need to fight in the public schools.

I go to a private school. Quaker. We have meeting for worship every Wednesday for about an hour. I sleep through it. It sucks. But, nevertheless, my school (despite certain teachers' prattling about "The Light of God in Everyone"), along with the Quaker religion as a whole, is very understanding with regard to nonbelievers. And that's nice.

But back on topic.
Saying the Pledge of Allegiance every week at school (in my old public school it was every day) is a moronic idea to begin with. It's almost as bad as "God Bless America" at baseball games. I mean, I'm as patriotic as the next guy, but where does God fit in? God didn't bless America in the "Holy" Bible.

Another thing that bothers me. Everyone in the goddamn stadium stands up to sing "God Bless America", too. And you CAN'T tell me that I'm the only Atheist in Shea Stadium.

Damn, I have issues with Christians.

Sure you are. All the rational thinkers are Yankee fans.

We have to say the pledge every day at my school, I put my right hand into an Armpit fart position and make sure to include the words:
Watermelon
Cantelope
Phalus

if that's not bad enough, I poled about 20 people at lunch, more than half believed that the USA was the only country with free speech, freddom of religion, and a democratic government
I'm in 7th grade, FTR.
Sad, isn't it? <img src="graemlins/boohoo.gif" border="0" alt="[Boo Hoo]" />
