Judeo/Christian Origins of the Constitution
This is a question aimed primarily at Christians in the United States.
I have heard, on numerous occasions, Christians claim that the US Constitution and Bill of Rights is based upon Biblical principles. What I've never heard or read (so far as I recall), is a single justification of this claim. So would the Christians on the board, or any Jews for that matter, care to explain this to me, complete with suitable Biblical chapter and verse? I think it was out very own debate bot, Ed, who suggested that the American Republic is Xian-based because it has three branches, just as the Xian god has three "persons."

You must realize, this is the same Ed who posted the "Argument from a Rapist with a Nuclear Strap-On" to counter the problem of evil. He's quite a (non-player) character. If you have some spare time and very low blood pressure, you might browse through some of the Ed threads in RRP.
Edited to add: Welcome to IIDB! Further edit: Here's a link to the RRP forum: Rants, Raves and Preaching N00B. [ November 29, 2002: Message edited by: Rimstalker ]
|

Interesting that this discussion has gone on for a while completely off topic. I was sure there were more Xians here spouting the "America has Judeo-Christian roots" crap.

I'm not a christian but I'll throw out an example of how their logic works.
Earlier this year in my state (WA) a senator put forth this bill to remove evolution from the schools and teach creation. SENATE BILL 6500 (2) The Declaration of Independence declares the self-evident truth that all men are created. The Declaration of Independence also declares that our rights are endowed by the Creator, and that governments are instituted among men to secure these God-given rights. (3) The Preamble to the Washington state Constitution also acknowledges the Supreme Ruler of the Universe as the grantor of our liberties. ...The self- evident truth that all men were created and endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights and that governments are accountable both to the Creator and the people to secure those rights is the foundation of all political, civil, and religious liberty in America. (6) Both the United States Constitution and the Washington state Constitution were instituted to protect rights endowed by the Creator. So, there ya have it: the Constituttion was instituted to protect rights endowed by the creator. Sounds logical to me, because creator MUST mean the judeo/christian god and therefore the god of the bible. Right? |
