Thumbs down

"Political correctness run amok" is the quote www.cnn.com is using for their headline right now.

Yep, pre-1954 America was a bastion of political correctness.

I am a regular writer at both Bartcop.com and Democraticunderground.com. These have been generally more supportive of free thinkers than most public fora. However, in the last 24 hours I have discovered that religious apartheid even in these liberal areas is still rampant. One common attitude is, "allowing atheists to have the same civil rights as the rest of the citizenry will cost us votes, so thanks but no thanks, you godless losers."

I had to come here to recharge my batteries.

This whole issue will be used as NOG* fund raising focus for years to come. How ridiculous. The thing I am most reminded of by the 'outrage' at this common sense ruling is having been beaten up in the elementary school playground for telling other five year olds that there is no Santa Claus. Seems that those Santa Claus fantasies never go away and beating people up for having a different world view is considered the Christian thing to do.

* NOGs = Nutters of God

Nice to be amongst the sane ones for a while,

I am actually hoping that the current Supreme Court does hear this case and not a Supreme Court 2 to 3 years down the road which might have GW Bush appointees on the court. IMO, the precedents set in Wallace v. Jaffree 472 U.S. 38 (1985) and Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe 530 U.S. 290 (2000) would be very difficult for any Supreme Court to overrule, but I think the current SC justices would be more likely to rule in favor of the 9th Circuit Court ruling than any future SC justices.

I was wondering what christians or other people that are currently railing against this ruling would say if instead of "under God" it said "under Goddess" (they do not really think that their god has male genitalia do they)?

Welcome, Faun_Otter. I am also extremely disappointed with the reaction of Democrats, including, and especially, Democratic leaders in the Senate.

What is particularly amusing about this issue is how it will force Convervatives and thumpers to show their hand:

Quote:
In Canada, where President Bush was taking part in an economic summit, White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said: "The president's reaction was that this ruling is ridiculous."
No George, what was ridiculous was your daddy saying athiests weren't real Americans.

Quote:
"The Supreme Court itself begins each of its sessions with the phrase 'God save the United States and this honorable court,'"
Yeah, so? Not the same thing as forcing a monotheistic deity on schoolchildren.

Quote:
Fleischer said. "The Declaration of Independence refers to God or to the creator four different times.
Ari and George apparently don't realize that the Declaration of Independence is not the law of the land. The Constitution is.

Quote:
Congress begins each session of the Congress each day with a prayer,
Of course, those times when the prayer was lead by someone who wasn't a bone fide fundy, some representatives have been known to walk out. Shows that they fully support religious belief, so long as it is their religious belief.

Quote:
and of course our currency says, 'In God We Trust.'
Which was added at the same time, as is as much a violation of the Establishment Clause, as the "under God" insertion into the Pledge.

Quote:
The view of the White House is that this was a wrong decision and the Department Justice is now evaluating how to seek redress."
In other words, the Justice Department, under the leadership of John "Terrorism Panic" Ashcroft, the man who covered up nude statues and had his family anoint him with Crisco like the Kings of old when he got a government office, is seeking ways to get around that pesky old Constitution.

Now we get the spectacle of politicians and religious leaders simultaeously trying to paint themselves as patriots and believers in the rule of law while they simultaneously try to circumvent the constitution.

Now is our chance to call them on it and expose them for what they are: Theocrats wrapping themselves in the flag.

Well, Bush's press conference with Russia's prime minister just ended during which he was actually preaching about how everything america stands for and the rights we have are from dog.

Damn, that screwed up occupant of the white house better be able to prove the existance of a god if his official office endorses it. Every lawmaker making a stink about the pledge better be able to prove the existance of god too or they should be thrown out on the street!

As if no Xian has ever said anything remotely as combative and confrontational as anything O'Hair ever said.

Uh-huh.

Why keep your mouth shut? Logic and the law are on your side. Bone up on your "talking points" and let the Bushbot have it with both barrels!!!

The poll conducted on the BBC news website currently stands at 61% for a change in the pledge, and 39% against. Good luck America, I hope that any appeals fail.
