Default Psalms as Prophecy

One thing that's always struck me as rather bizzare is that the Psalms are used as prophecies in the NT, when it seems quite clear that they were not intended to be so. The Psalms are principally used to describe the Crucifixion, and also the concept of two "lords" in Psalm 110 is used to refer to Jesus and God(In actuality, the Psalm was probably written by a servant of David stating God talking to David---David for instance was a king who performed some priestly sacrifices and ruled Jerusalem-hence him being named as a sucessor to Genesis's mysterious "Melchediesk"(sp). Even Jesus refers that the "Psalms" must be fufilled.
My main point is, were the Psalms ever really thought to really be "prophecy"? Or is this once again Christians stretching things?
