Jat, I already donate money to an organization that helps victims of domestic violence and I vote for candidates who take domestic violence seriously, support funding for services for victims, and support moderate gun control measures. What else must I do before I may criticize institutionalized violence in another culture?

On the same note, do you think Amnesty International should confine its efforts to the UK, since there are some human rights violations there?

They should go where ever there are human rights violations, even if that includes North America. Far too many Americans mistakenly believe that they could never be guilty of war crimes or the vilolation of human rights just because they are AMERICANS. They demand this of everyone else, but exclude themselves from their own standards. This is hypocritical.

You're just bitter because you live in a frozen second world country. Hell, Canada can't be all that great if more people would rather live in Mexico.

Now excuse me while I go smack some dinner out of my lazy wife.

Very very true. Now, can you point out where in this thread that attitude has been expressed? Also, could you respond to my first point?

If Canada is a second rate country than the USA is a 4th rate one.

Nothing else, but sadly most don't do as much as you do. I give my support where I can as well.

It doesn't exactly have to be expressed in this particalar thread, it is an over all attitude of too many Americans that just being an American makes one better than everyone else on the planet and above such scrutiny that they demand of others.

Jat, you think you could grind that axe a little harder?

I actually respect a lot of your points in general, but sheesh.

second world used to refer to the soviet union IIRC. (Although a raving lunatic like Pat Buchanan referred to canada as "soviet canuckistan" so that might count)

Since we're on the topic of women and cultural criticism, we should ask how the United States (and others) deals with countries notorious for their mistreatment of women. It seems to be a case of expediencey over human rights after all: http://www.newsday.com/templates/mis...ws/columnists.
