Phelps and Co. coming to my area..
Well, the Reverend Phelps and his posse is coming to CSU to celebrate the anniversary of Matthew Shepherd's death.
I have urged people to let them be, and let them get no attention whatsoever, but it ain't happening. That said: Suggestions? Any other Colorado (Or Kansas/Utah/Wyoming) Infidels planning on attending? I plan to be there, and hope to try to mediate/restrain the worst on our side. Perhaps if we can be shown as reasonable and compassionate, this fool will look all the more the idiot to the TV cameras. Yes, TV. News is slow out here, so I expect the main 5 news crews to be present. (ABC,NBC,CBS,FOX,WB) What a circus. Phelps' schedule in the area is this: Oct. 12, 2002 2 hrs before game Ft. Collins, CO Hughes Stadium, 1917 Overland Trail Oct. 13, 2002 8:00 am – 8:30 am Casper, WY First United Methodist Church, 332 E. 2nd Oct. 13, 2002 8:45 am – 9:15 am Casper, WY Casper College, intersection of 15th and Wolcott Oct. 13, 2002 9:30 am – 10:00 am Casper, WY St. Mark’s Episcopal, 701 S. Wolcott Oct. 13, 2002 10:00 am – 10:30 am Casper, WY First Presbyterian Church, 804 S. Wolcott Oct. 13, 2002 10:30 am – 11:00 am Casper, WY St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, 7th & Center I always feel so soiled after going to that man's website to check his schedule. |

Why treat these people any different that you would treat the Klan?

What I can't believe is that many churches welcoming him. I thought most christians denounce Phelps et al. They do when I call them on his nonsense. I guess they lie to me.
<fundy crosses fingers> "No, we don't support Rev. Phelps at all." That's friggin scary that it looks like every flavor of xtianity in is opening its doors to him. |

Do a poster with "God hates Figs!"
(Please see this) Ridicule is the only way I see of dealing with him. Make fun of him and his group. Keep some physical distance from the cult. Simian |

This man is one of the biggest wastes of a human out there. It’s a tough call on counter demonstrating, because he loves the attention. Maybe you could demonstrate on the other side of the street with your backs to him at all times. |

Well, I saw one notion that I liked on another thread (don’t remember which one, now) – a Pledge-A-Thon! It was suggested that people pledge a dollar amount for every minute that Phelps spews his crap, and then the money be donated to some worthy cause (preferably an organization that he hates, like a gay/lesbian services group).
Gotta admit, I like that one. It raises money for a good cause, and it tends to cause him to cut his little sermons short. |

Thanks… I just wish I could take credit for it!
I got confused – I thought that I had read the idea on a thread at this site, but actually I picked it up at witchvox.com I do think it’s a really great idea, though. Here's the link to that particular news article and commentary at witchvox. Here are quotes from the two comments I liked. Quote:

MzNeko, that's a great idea that was given a great deal of circulation through organizations like PFLAG (Parents, Family, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays.) They did it around a year and a half ago at a Phelps event here in Oklahoma and, apparently, raised a nice little chunk of change for gay awareness and AIDS organizations.
Again, fabulous idea. I'd definitely look into something like that, Dark Jedi. |
