Did the Greek creation myth not occur to you? We are great because we were given fire by Prometheus and had certain good things given to us already by Jupiter. We are wretched because we don't always know how to use fire and other technology, because of Jupiter's punishment, and because even now (or especially now) the gods sometimes wish we were the more-easily-controlled creatures without fire.
