More info on Georgia schools and the upcoming elections.

Quote:
I just spoke with a staff member in the Barbara Christmas campaign
office, she is running as the Democratic candidate for Linda
Schrenko's position as state school superintendant against Kathy Cox
(the Republican candidate, not to be confused with Cathy Cox, Sec'y
of State). I asked for her position on Cobb County, and was told
that she feels strongly that math teachers should write math
curriculum and science teachers should write science curriculum. He
also stated that she frowns on local school boards putting themselves
in a position to be a party in a lawsuit. Her opponent has expressed
support for what happened in Cobb, so get out there and vote for
Christmas and do whatever else you can. I'm not sure what control
the Superintendant's office has over local schools, maybe someone can
shed light on that. I know that office is in charge of curriculum,
but not to what extent they can influence what is taught.
If you are a Georgia voter, please vote.

P.S. This is my own opinion, and does not reflect the 501(c)(3) non-opinions of II.

The most notable disagreement came at the debate's end when WSB
moderator Bill Nigut asked the candidates about Cobb County's recent
fight over teaching creationism in schools.

"I don't intend to be pulled into any hot-button political issues,"
said Christmas. "Our mission is to make sure that children can read
and do math and that they are prepared for further education. The
state curriculum should be based on scientific theory, and religious
beliefs should be taught by parents and the clergy."

But Cox said "it was a good thing for parents and the community to
stand up and say we want our children exposed to this [creationism]
idea as well. ... I'd leave the state out of it and I would make sure
teachers were well prepared to deal with competing theories."

A long-scheduled review of state science standards, expected to take two years, has begun. It is not clear whether evolution requirements will be strengthened or changed. Any changes will go before the state board of education for approval.

They seriously don't seem to realise (or they do, but won't admit) THat their children get all the exposure they could ever want in Sunday school.

Where it belongs

Hey don't count us out yet in Ohio. We are really trying our best. Heck, we've bested everyone else. We'll be allowing other options to evolution so ID can be taught. Can you say that?

What a rat race!

For instance, while serving in the Senate, Perdue co-sponsored
legislation for state-funded high school courses in the history and
literature of the Old Testament and the New Testament eras, using the
Bible as a textbook. That bill, co-sponsored by Democratic Sen. Peg
Blitch, went nowhere. "I favor that being offered for children who would
want that," he said.

Perdue said he sees nothing wrong with children being taught a variety
of theories about the origins of life, including the biblical
interpretation, though he says the decision should be left up to each
school district.

"Creationism, simply because it came from the Bible, is still accepted
in society . . . and I think kids ought to be exposed to that," he said,
"not from a proselytizing standpoint, but from a standpoint that much of
society subscribes to it."
