mike_decockDo you really believe this? It's not hard to imagine pleasure without pain. You don't need to suffer starvation to enjoy a chocolate sundae.

What happens with the initial pleasure of eating chocolate sundae that turns in to pain when you eat to much?

If there was no pain, then we would be able to eat it continuously.

Imagine never being able to be filled up by anything you eat, sure you would get all the taste, but what about the satisfaction after having eaten it?

There needs to be a balance between the two things, the golden middle path.

So, too much pleasure and you will crave pain? Does this make ANY sense to you?

This throws a rather big wrench into the "Jesus is God and died for our sins" story you're rather fond of recounting, doesn't it?
No it doesn't - Jesus was also human. His mortal, human side died - not the God part. For people who claim to understand Christianity better than Christians, i really find you lacking in basic concepts.

As mentioned countless times before, most people here were Christians in the past, and guess what - the doctrine doesn't make any sense to them.

Not surprised, the Bible says things of God are foolishness to the unbeliever. I don't expect you to ever understand it - but really - Jesus being God and human is quite simple whether you understand the Trinity or not. God, spiritual being, incarnate in the flesh. Human body dies, stays in the grave for 3 days, then is ressurected to perfection.

Ah yes, the bible, complete with ad hominems and unsupported assertions. How does not being prepared to critically analyse things make you more credible? And what about those believers that couldn't make sense of it and left the faith? Oh, I know - they weren't TRUE believers, right?

I'd say no to the opening question.

A couple of other different questions that I've considered over the years: Can I keep my atheism quiet, despite it's minority status in the US, when I'm quite sure I'll die an atheist (have been a non-believer for 25 years) and find for myself (and others) a non-belief in the supernatural leads to a better life? (I tried for a decade to figure out a god I could believe in but nothing happened.) Can I morally withhold this more real and useful viewpoint from my children?

No and No. I find I become more outspoken when faced with an assumption that I'm a believer or when religious beliefs are imposed in places they shouldn't be.

Some of you Christians seem to use so much of your time finding bible passages to support you actions (while skipping over the nonsensical ones) when you could just be using your heads (or widening your resources for more coherent points of view) and saving a lot of time. This time could be used to help others, accomplish more, to truly reflect on life's challenges or to just enjoy life more!

(If trying to lead a life that is dictated by the passages you choose from the bible is what you need, fine. Just realize there are many of us who lead moral, civilized, vibrant lives without a bible as our guide. Keep your beliefs where they belong--my kids don't see this as a nation "under god" for example.)

(Sorry this isn't quite on thread, but I have a hard time with the people who think I'm defective somehow because the thought of a god in the world, especially their Xian one, doesn't make sense to me.)

Feeling satisfied is not painful.

No, I am talking about if you feel satisfied and keep on eating you will put in to much food in your stomach and the expanding that results will eventually be painful.

If this can't happen, then pain doesn't exist.

Would you like to have a stomach that never expanded no matter how much you eat?

If you answer no, then "pain" is is a way of telling us that we should stop our action.

Just like those people that have no sensitivity, they can touch red hot iron and not feel they are being burned, but the hand is still being damaged.

In the physical reality it is quite smart to have pain. So from a certain point of view I Love Pain.

Sure. No stomach expansion, no weight gain from eating too much. I see no problem with that.

You're thinking within the limitations of our physical reality. Physical damage to sentient beings is a non-essential property which makes pain non-essential as well. Pleasure could certainly exist without pain and if I were a universe-creating deity, I would certainly design it in that manner (and all you heathens would have good reason for worshipping me) .
